Emperor’s Champion miniature

GamesWorkshop_Champion

This is another Games Workshop figurine I have painted. This time I have also modified the model slightly. I have replaced his jet pack with angel wings. I wanted to make him into a winged paladin, like Tyrael from the game Diablo 2.

I used the same techniques as with my other Games Workshop figurines. First filing and sanding down the flash lines (residual material from the casting process), then I had to prepare the figure and the wings so I could attach them. As the figure and wings are pewter, this was a bit difficult and involved very strong glue, drilling a hole in the back of the figure and adding a small rod to the wings that fit into the hole. I painted all the parts before assembly and touched it up once assembled.

After the sanding and prep, the figure is primed, then given a base coat. In this case the light and dark areas each got their own base coat.  Then the shadows were painted, contours were dry brush for contrast and effect, grime glazes in various tints added to different areas and highlights were dry brushed in.

Very fine details, such as the writing on the shoulder, were done with a brush that had only two bristles. I had several goes at this before deciding this was good enough. The letters are just over 1mm in height and I am still slightly annoyed they aren’t neater. There does come a point though where one is just being silly and nitpicky.

The figure’s base is 2.5cm in diamter, the figure is about 5.3cm tall to the top of the wings.

Tiny lettering, painted on with a two-bristle brush.

This skull painted on the ribbon is less than 1mm x 1mm.
